Hardcore Jeet Kune Do Training

In the process of cleaning up some old stuff I had in storage, I ran across a few things that really took me on a trip down memory lane.
Nhan Khuong and Zee Lo

Myself and Sifu Dr. Zee Lo right outside the clinic.  Yes, I had short hair once.

I began my Jeet Kune Do training in 2001 with Sifu Zee Lo during my last year as an undergraduate at UCLA.  Training was roughly three times weekly in the parking lot (we had a single fluorescent light that turned everything a dreary greenish yellow for visibility) behind Sifu Zee Lo’s small private Acupuncture clinic.  I started out as a dummy for Sifu Lo’s private students.  Although I came armed with a hefty 15+ years of previous martial arts experience, I noticed an obvious deficiency in the practicality of my approach.  Soon after graduating college, I enrolled in Sifu Zee Lo’s medical/martial arts apprenticeship program.  Thus beginning my “hardcore” Jeet Kune Do training.

My day would generally look something like:

7am -9:30am : study and personal life
10am - 1pm : TCM (tradition Chinese Medicine) lecture and clinic hours
1pm - 2pm : private JKD training
3pm - 7pm: lecture and clinic hours
7pm - 8:30pm: JKD semi-private training
8:30pm - 9pm: cleanup and closeup
9pm - 11pm: study and personal life

I would squeeze in meals and short breaks whenever possible.  On days that we did not have class, I would either have some extra time for study or meeting with training partners.

West Los Angeles Jeet Kune Do

This is the back of the training room and the few students who                                 stayed with us during the last year of operation.

About two years into my training we moved out of the parking lot and into a small storage room.  Although the space was considerably smaller, we were at least out of the elements.  This room was about 9 feet wide, 14 feet long, and had bare concrete floors, brick walls, and long flickering fluorescent ceiling lights.  Training was old school and hardcore.  Although injuries were common, we were able to treat them in-house to speed up recovery.  Suffice it to say, we didn’t have many students

This is the front of the training room.  The mirror in the background is the only one in the room which I broke with the back of my head the first night we put it in.  Notice the clear packing tape holding it together.

Jeet Kune Do Sparring

Sparring with minimal gear.  BTW those  are 12oz gloves                                          . . . and they hurt.

We laid out some folding martial arts mats about a year after moving in and also installed a wooden rail for stretching.

I was living in the clinic for about one year before moving next door to the training space for another year.  I was literally living and breathing medicine and Jeet Kune Do for roughly two years.

During the last 18 months of my training Sifu Lo was in the process of relocating to San Francisco in pursuit of his movie making dreams.  I kept up the West Los Angeles JKD classes in his absence while traveling up to San Francisco once monthly to supplement my training.

Jeet Kune Do Side Kick

This is me sparring with Zee Lo’s students in San Francisco.

After Zee Lo completed his relocation, I attempted to keep the Jeet Kune Do school open, however a lack of marketing and business skills combined with our archaic training methods and environment discouraged most would-be students early on.

In the three years following the closure of the West Los Angeles Jeet Kune Do school, I began building a personal training business and establishing my own acupuncture practice while maintaining some form of combative arts training usually consisting of backyard style boxing, kickboxing, submission wrestling, self defense, etc.

About one year after marrying the woman of my dreams, San Gabriel Valley Jeet Kune Do was born.

Happiness

Victoria (the love of my life) and I

My previous “hardcore” Jeet Kune Do training has proven invaluable, however I
have found that focusing on people and individuals yields more powerful results than focusing on the hardcore experience.

Now I am in the process of melding fitness, medicine, health, martial arts and business into the ultimate people/results oriented consumer empowerment resource, all while nurturing an amazing family life.

Pasadena Martial Arts

As for my current Jeet Kune Do training, I still continue my own development with Tim Tackett, Jeremy Lynch, and the Wednesday Night Group twice weekly.

See you in class!

Still Here . . .

Well, the Jeet Kune Do blog has been pretty quiet the past three weeks as I have been tremendously busy, so I’m just checking in for a little update on what’s going on.

As many of you know, I have been in the process of pursuing my passion for martial arts and health, both on the personal level and business wise.  This year has truly been challenging on so many levels, to say the least, and I have only recently, within the past few months begun to see and feel significant results from my invested energies.

Thanks to the support of my amazing, loving, goddess of a wife, the rest of my family, my friends, students, and colleagues, I am able to steadily build toward my goals and dreams.

On a lighter note, in order to improve the quality of instruction that my students receive, I have diligently been working on my own personal improvement.  Although self development is a continuous endeavor without bounds, I have recently reached a significant milestone, but more on that later.

I will be announcing some very exciting and very positive surprises within the next few months into the New Year.

Change is in the air . . . and this is good.

DVD Jeet Kune Do Certification

The internet is an amazing tool that has brought within grasp, information that has been otherwise nearly impossible to obtain.  With this unrestrained access to electronic resources, however, there are those with questionable intent who muddle the free flow of thought inspiring information.

More specifically, I am referring to DVD based Jeet Kune Do certification programs being promoted via the internet.  I regularly receive questions regarding my thoughts on these programs.  Jeet Kune Do is not an easy martial art in which to receive training given the lack of qualified instructors, so I can certainly understand the attraction of a DVD program.  Instruction through electronic and paper media are powerful supplements, but they are exactly that — supplements.

Self taught martial artists with extraordinary skills and understanding do exist, Bruce Lee being one of the more obvious examples, but they are the minority and even these martial artists had mentors and teachers.

Jeet Kune Do simply cannot be learned without human interaction and some level of personalized guidance.

What is the purpose of a DVD JKD certification anyway?  Is it for teaching credibility?  I certainly hope not, as this would be a truly sad blow to the founder’s legacy.

Jeet Kune Do is not about accumulation of techniques and strategies as a training video might imply, but rather about personal growth and liberation over a foundation of phsyical, mental, and spiritual development expressed in combative form.

So, the take home message:  Learn what you can from videos and books, be critical of the information and its sources, and seek out a qualified mentor/teacher.

Jeet Kune Do Offered at the Azusa Adult School

The Azusa Adult School will now be offering basic Jeet Kune Do and bodyweight based strength and conditioning this coming Fall.

I will be teaching a two hour class Thursday evenings entitled “Urban Self Defense & Functional Fitness.”

At a tuition of $80 for two months of training, this is a steal!  Keep in mind, however, that due to liability issues, contact will not be used during training.  With the exception of focus mitts, this will be a non-contact class.

For more info and registration go to: http://www.adultedreg.com/azusa/index.cfm?processtype=department&deptid=5261

International Mixed Martial Arts Expo Review

After a jam packed weekend, the MMA Expo in Long Beach finally wrapped up.

It is good to see that martial arts is such a strong industry.  In fact, it appears that we are in revival or "renaissance" that has not been seen since the 1960’s and 1970’s with Bruce Lee and all the Karate superstars like Chuck Norris, Mike Stone, Joe Lewis, Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, and others.

The creativity among many of the exhibitors was tremendous, ranging from apparel, training equipment, supplements, fitness gear, training, and more.

All in all, the experience was good, although I am a bit disappointed with dominant images associated with the MMA industry.  Apparel companies like Affliction, Thug Fight wear, and many others could really use a makeover to help produce a more positive image, but I suppose sex and violence sell.  On other hand, companies like the guys at Chess Game fight gear are focusing more on the art and skill of MMA.

Of course, MMA superstars like Tito Ortiz, BJ Penn, Joe Stevenson, and Urijah Faber, always draw in a rush of fans for autographs.

I’ll be looking forward to the next event.

International Mixed Martial Arts Expo August 2nd & 3rd

If you haven’t already heard, one of the largest mixed martial arts trade shows will be taking place next weekend on August 2nd and 3rd at the Long Beach, CA convention center.

International Mixed Martial Arts Expo IMMAE Banner

I’ll be there helping my fitness industry colleague Octavio Galindo promoting his new product the Concentric Core Board.

Check out our booth banners featuring yours truly and Victoria Vives. These giant sized vinyl booth banners were designed by 3V Prototype Productions on VERY short notice and I have to say that they did an absolutely awesome job!

The Future of Jeet Kune Do

Bruce Lee passed away 35 years ago today and the Bruce Lee Foundation held a very special three day weekend event in honor of his memory and the incredible legacy he left behind.

It was a touching weekend to hear from and meet so many of the people whose lives Bruce Lee touched. We heard from many of his original students, close friends, and family, including Linda lee Cadwell (widow), Shannon Lee (daughter), Allen Joe, Jesse Glover, Ted Wong, George Lee and Taky Kimura.

The highlight of the celebration for me however, was the Sunday morning Instructor Summit, the first ever organized gathering of JKD students and instructors of all backgrounds. It was good to see that the interest in keeping Bruce Lee’s Martial Art legacy alive is still very strong.

The objective of the Summit was to discuss the Bruce Lee Foundation’s (BLF) role in Jeet Kune Do. This was an exciting occasion mainly due to the fact that the Jeet Kune Do community is so loosely organized without any real universally accepted guiding authority.
Although the task of centralizing JKD without stepping on toes is virtually impossible, it appears that the BLF is prepared to step up to the plate. Here are a few of the results of the JKD Instructor’s Summit, as I understood them (in no particular order):

1. The BLF will consult all willing first generation JKD students in order to compile a fundamental JKD manual to serve as a basic and universal guide.
2. The BLF will announce JKD seminars and events held by first generation instructors
3. The BLF will list JKD instructors and their lineages so that those seeking instruction may have easier access.

Keep in mind that these are only preliminary decisions and that this chapter in JKD history has only just begun.

I’ll post more updates as they become available.

In health.

Upcoming JKD and Fitness News

It has been a busy week, hence the lack of new posts in the last short while. So here is a quick update:

The Bruce Lee Foundation 35th anniversary is just around the corner! I will be attending a good portion, so I hope to see some of you there. In any case, I will definitely be writing a review of the experience.

I have a few surprises coming out in the next months.

In partnership with a local “non-classical” Pilates studio, I will be helping in the launch of an VERY innovative piece of fitness equipment and training video series. There is nothing like it available, and I expect it to make waves in the fitness training industry.

I have also been working with 3V Prototype Productions on plans for producing a series of Jeet Kune Do instructional videos that combine Original JKD methodology and some serious functional fitness conditioning techniques for all levels so stay tuned for more info.

Lastly, I have been scouring martial arts equipment manufacturers for the best, safest, most durable, training gear on the market and will be making reviews and recommendations shortly.

Remember to join my mailing list for special deals and discounts that I will arrange only for my subscribers.
