The Jack Dempsey Straight Blast
May 1st, 2008 · Filed Under: Technique
Jack Dempsey, old time heavyweight boxing champion was high on Bruce Lee’s list of exemplary fighters.
An expert straight puncher, Dempsey was a truly technical fighter with an approach that was rather unorthodox yet tremendously effective. There are significant snippets in Bruce Lee’s Tao of Jeet Kune Do that are direct quotes of Dempsey’s technical descriptions.
Why did Bruce Lee respect Dempsey so much? I think the videos below will show much more than words can.
The historic Jack Dempsey vs Jess Willard fight of 1919 became known as one of the most brutal in history when Dempsey unleashed the famous “Dempsey Roll” on the giant Willard who outmatched Dempsey by 60 pounds, 5 1/2 inches in height and a full six inch reach advantage.
Although Bruce Lee did not leave detailed “how to” instructions on the straight blast there is uncanny resemblance to the “non-crispy” version that he was seen executing on a heavy bag.
Take a look.
